The course lectures, Maryke and Susan, set up a wonderful practical for the students in the second last week of the first term. It was an informal practical where students learnt different facts about the Cape Flats Nature Reserve by doing a form of "scavenger hunting", looking for clues and filling out a set of questions. It was an awesome way of bringing information across to students which can otherwise be a tedious affair!
I was both surprised and impressed with the LFS 151 students as to how enthusiastically they participated in this activity. They discovered animals and plants especially which they never knew existed and I think this excited them even more so! I had a fun time walking around with various groups students and assisting them when they got stuck or began to lag behind. It was a great setting in which to get to know some of the students in a more informal environment, where we could chat about other interests while we walked from one station number to the next.
I would definitely suggest that this practical be kept in the program for future students as there is very little which needed improvement. Also, I am sure they are all looking forward to finding out who the overall winners are in this make shift "Amazing Race". Good luck groups!
All the best,
